There is no set answer to this question we're afraid - it's rather like asking "how long is a piece of string?"! Pupils who are willing to put in the time, hard work, energy into learning an instrument are likely to reach a basic level of playing within one term, and over a longer time-span can often reach levels of playing which surpass both personal expectations and, in some cases, even those of the teacher.
