Local schools involved in the Telford Music Enhancement project were
invited to perform at the official opening of 'The Place', a brand new
annex built onto the existing Oakengates Theatre in Telford.
The annex was opened by Arts Minister, Estelle Morris who was treated
to a front row seat for our first performance 'The Laymans Guide To
Telford' which was written by Gareth Jones for its premiere at the
National Association of Headteachers Conference in May 2005. The
performance featured a combined choir of children from St. George’s
Primary School and Wrockwardine Wood Junior School accompanied by a
small chamber orchestra from the newly formed, Telford New Symphony
Orchestra
After the performance, Estelle Morris met up with the second guest of
the day, comedian Julian Clary. Following a brief speech to local
councillors and members of the public, both guests were given a full
tour around the new site. Following the tour, Estelle and Julian were
treated to another performance from schools involved in the TMEP! -
This time African Drumming. A purpose built stage in the square played
host to children from Woodside Junior School and African Drummer Nicky
Reid. The school presented a piece of traditional West African drumming
complete with authentic Djembe drums. The performance was really well
received by the large crowd gathering by the stage!. So much so
that Estelle and Julian were invited onto the stage to join the
children from Woodside for a short workshop and performance. With just
a few minutes to learn the techniques of Djembe both guests did really
well compared to the expertise and professionalism of Nicky and the
Woodside children!
