Thursday, September 1st saw our first instrumental teachers CPD event
held at the Birmingham Conservatoire. The theme for the day was
'beginnings - the first lesson' where the aim of the day was to agree a
series of collective aims and objectives for the first instrumental
lesson.
Through various group discussions and practical activities, staff had
the opportunity to discuss the essential ingredients of the first
instrumental lesson. Following group discussions in the morning, staff
had the opportunity to try out their lesson ideas for real. Members of
staff were paired together and were given the task of teaching their
partner 'the first lesson' on an instrument they hadn’t played before -
with some interesting results. Our guitar teacher, Louis Clark had
managed to learn Kum-Ba-Ya on the Flute, our clarinet teacher, Gareth
Jones learnt to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the Cello and Chris Heighton
learnt all about paradiddles and double paradiddles on the snare drum!
